Bahrain sentences 8 to life in prison on terrorism charges

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – A court in Bahrain has sentenced eight people to life in prison on various terrorism-related charges connected to protests by the country’s majority Shiites demanding greater rights from the tiny-island nation’s Sunni-led monarchy.

The official Bahrain News Agency says the Fourth High Criminal Court on Thursday sentenced three to life in prison for causing an explosion that wounded a policeman and detonating explosives that damaged two police vehicles in January 2015.

The same court on Wednesday sentenced five people to life in prison for smuggling and possessing explosives for terrorism purposes. The case dates back to March 2015 when the suspects’ explosives were found aboard tourist bus coming from Iraq.

A prosecutor quoted in the Bahrain News Agency said the five have the right to an appeal.
