Construction is underway on the fourth and final phase of the Kicking Horse Canyon upgrade on Highway 1 east of Golden.<\/p>\n

The 26 kilometre section of the Trans-Canada will be closed overnight through to Feb. 17. The closures from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. start up again Feb. 21 and continue through March.<\/p>\n

There are also half-hour delays through that section in non-peak travel hours from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 8 p.m. until the 10 p.m. closure.<\/p>\n

There may even be multi-day closures during non-peak times, the Ministry of Transportation says on its website.<\/p>\n

“Three phases of work have transformed 21 kilometres of narrow, winding two-lane highway into a modern four-lane, 100 km\/h standard,” the website says. “Construction of the fourth and final phase to complete the remaining – and most difficult – 4.8 kilometres is expected to be substantially complete in winter 2023-24.”<\/p>\n

The closures are from Golden Donald Upper Road, two km east of Golden, to the Yoho Bridge, seven km east of Golden.<\/p>\n

An alternative route is available via Highway 95 and Highway 93S, a detour estimated by Drive B.C. to add about 1.5 hours to the trip.<\/p>\n

“As a tourist and commercial transportation corridor, the highway carries more than 10,000 vehicles daily during the summer,” the Ministry website says. “While the mix varies by season, up to 30% of the traffic consists of commercial vehicles moving millions of dollars in goods.”<\/p>\n
