Glenmore car wash scrubbed

KELOWNA – A proposed six-bay car wash on Glenmore Rd. was struck down unanimously at a packed public hearing Tuesday night.

Kelowna city staff recommended March 31 the car wash be set on a vacant lot in Glenmore Village Centre, however the majority of councillors voiced concerns after receiving negative feedback from area residents.

“I have some real concerns about this application,” Robert Hobson said. “It’s right next to a residential area and they can’t put in the kind of buffer we would normally put in because it would block the view of the park. I am very dubious about this.”

Coun. Luke Stack expressed similar concerns, even going so far as to call the development “an assault on the neighbourhood”.

City clerk Stephen Fleming says roughly 125 people attended the two-hour public hearing and almost all of them were opposed to the project. The city also received approximately 20 letters of opposition prior to the hearing.

“They were concerned with the noise, impact on Brandts Creek Linear Park and some felt it was incompatible land use to either the parks’ land use or the residential land use,” he says. “The applicant did a good job with their application but was encouraged to look for a different site to do the car wash in Kelowna.”
