Local triathlete wins Monterrey Ironman

KELOWNA – A local woman from Kelowna beat out thousands of athletes to win the Monterrey Ironman in Mexico.

Heather Wirtele took the Women’s Pro division title Sunday with an overall time of 4.07.47, almost six minutes ahead of second place.

The triathlon happened in Nuevo Leon, Mexico and included a 1.5 mile swim in the man-made Santa Lucia River, a 56 mile bike course finishing near the Palacio de Goberno and a 12.8 mile run through Fundidora Park.

More than 2000 athletes from around the world competed for a professional grand prize of $50,000 and a chance to enter the 2014 Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec.

Tim Don of Great Britain won the men’s event with an overall time of 3.46.59.
