Stuart Park free curling last hurrah for the season

KELOWNA – Falling snow and a little cold didn't stop dozens of people from giving curling a try at Stuart Park Ice Rink Wednesday morning. 

The Kelowna Curling Club was given permission by the City early this week to have a free curling demo at the popular downtown skating rink. Curling Club employee Tyler Klassen says the turnout was better than they expected and he's hopeful it will happen again next year.

"It's been pretty good," he says. "People have been coming in and out all morning. It's not exactly the best weather but everybody's enjoying it."

Curling Club general manager Jock Tyre says he is trying to convince the City to allow outdoor curling on a more regular basis.

"There just isn't outdoor curling," he says. "That's what makes this really unique. The whole idea is to get people to come down and give curling a try."

Tanya Pauls from Kelowna decided to do just that. She heard about the opportunity and rode her bike through the slush and rain.

"I've never tried it and I've always wanted to," she says. "I loved it. I think it was a great idea."

The Kelowna Curling Club is holding an open house March 22 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The cost is $40 per team, sign up at the Kelowna Curling Club.
