City embracing social media

KELOWNA – The City of Kelowna continues to embrace social media in its effort to stay connected with residents.

The City already tweets regularly, they have an active presence on Facebook and six months ago, they added Instagram.

Deputy City Manager Paul Macklem presented the results of the program to Council Monday, saying that the results so far are encouraging.

“As we know, the tech sector continues to grow and we need to be prepared to grow with it,” he said.

The City of Kelowna’s website had around 750,000 unique visitors in 2013, up seven per cent from 2012, but the most startling increase is in how the site is being accessed. More than half have hit the site using mobile devices, up 82 per cent from last year.

“(We saw) major changes in how people look at communicating with the City of Kelowna,” Macklem said.

In the Twittersphere, followers of CoK’s account increased by almost 50 per cent since 2012, to approximately 8700 followers. Kelowna also saw an increase in ‘likes’ on its Facebook page, up 49 per cent from 2012. Currently, 270 Instagram users follow their account.

“They’re just small indicators,” Macklem says, “but I’m sure those numbers will increase greatly over the next couple years.”
