SASKATOON – The Saskatchewan government is moving a step closer to allowing professional combative sporting events such as mixed martial arts and boxing in the province.
On Tuesday, it proclaimed the Athletics Commission Act, which provides the province with the authority to establish the Athletics Commission of Saskatchewan.
That would be the body that would sanction professional combative sporting events in the province and ensure a consistent set of rules, regulations and safety protocols.
It would also approve event permits, ensure that promoters and competitors have the proper licences and that event rules are adhered to.
Applications for promoter and contestant licences, as well as event permits, will be accepted starting in early April.
