Dog survives ride on truck’s hot engine during California heat wave

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. – A dog has survived a 110-mile (177-kilometre) ride on the hot engine of a truck during a California heat wave.

The driver felt the truck move slightly after he stopped in San Clemente on Monday. The Orange County Register newspaper says 52-year-old Jaime Magaña noticed fur above the left front tire, and he opened the hood to find a 25-pound (11-kilogram) dog atop the engine.

Temperatures outside were nudging 100 degrees (37.78 Celsius).

Magaña called for help and an animal control officer put the dog, nicknamed Chevy, into her air-conditioned truck. It perked right up.

The hunt is on for the dog’s owner.
