Pospisil gives Canada strong start with straight-sets win in Davis Cup tie

MONTREAL – Vasek Pospisil has given Canada the strong start it wanted in its Davis Cup tie with South Africa.

The Vancouver native beat Izak van der Merwe 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in the opening of the five-match series at Uniprix Stadium.

Pospisil had seven aces and broke van der Merwe four times en route to the straight-sets victory.

World No. 15 Milos Raonic is now facing Nikala Scholtz with a chance to give Canada a 2-0 lead in the series.

Pospisil teams up with doubles ace Daniel Nestor of Toronto on Saturday, then Raonic and Pospisil close with singles matches on Sunday.

The winner of the tie stays in the elite World Group, while the loser is relegated to zone play.
