Algerian president in France for ‘periodic medical care’

ALGIERS, Algeria – Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has returned to a clinic in France for a routine checkup.

The president’s office said that Bouteflika, 79, travelled on Monday to a clinic in Grenoble, where he was treated nearly a year ago, for “periodic medical care.”

Bouteflika suffered a stroke in 2013 that has left him wheelchair-bound. His five-day stay in a Geneva clinic in April fed rumours about a new health setback.

He spent time in a Grenoble clinic, in southeast France, last December.

Bouteflika took office in 1999 and has been re-elected three times, with the constitution modified to do away with a limit on presidential mandates.
