SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Latest on a renewed search for remains of a California college student who vanished more than 20 years ago (all times local):
1 p.m.
FBI specialists are excavating a hilly site on the edge of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, in hope of finding the remains of a student who vanished more than 20 years ago.
The Tribune of San Luis Obispo says (http://bit.ly/2ci8UZ1) heavy equipment dug up dirt Wednesday and carried it to an area where FBI agents sifted through it.
Nineteen-year-old Kristin Smart of Stockton was last seen in the early morning of May 25, 1996, while returning to her dorm after an off-campus party. A male student told authorities he left Smart near her dormitory.
San Luis Obispo County Sheriff Ian Parkinson said Tuesday the site near a campus parking lot was one of several identified in January by dogs specially trained in detecting the scent of very old human remains.
The sheriff says the renewed search followed a lengthy review of the voluminous investigation.
