Britain’s Andy Murray pulls out of Rogers Cup; Raonic through to quarter-finals

TORONTO – Olympic tennis champion Andy Murray has pulled out of the Rogers Cup men’s tournament in Toronto.

Britain’s gold medallist says he’s taking precautions with his left knee after hurting it during his opening match against Italy’s Flavio Cipolla.

Murray was set to play Canadian favourite Milos Raonic — the tournament’s 16th seed — in a third-round match Thursday night.

Raonic, from Thornhill, Ont., will advance to the quarter-finals of the tournament for the first time in his career.

Murray says he’s unsure whether he will play in the ATP Tour’s next stop in Cincinnati or the upcoming U.S. Open.

His withdrawal follows a string of elite players to pull out the Rogers Cup. Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal both withdrew just prior to the tournament.

Rain has delayed Thursday’s match between top-seed Novak Djokovic and American Sam Querrey.
