Winnipeg man kept kids behind bars in Mexico, exposed them to prostitutes, drugs

WINNIPEG – Two Winnipeg children who were kidnapped by their father and hidden in Mexico for four years lived behind bars and were exposed to prostitution, drugs and alcohol.

Crown attorney Debbie Buors has told a sentencing hearing for Kevin Maryk (MAIR’-ick) that his children didn’t attend school and were only taken out at night.

She says the home they were staying in had cameras inside and out, thick chains on the outside door, as well as bars on the main door.

Buors says one of the children has talked about how they were exposed to drugs, prostitutes, gangs and corrupt police officers.

Maryk pleaded guilty last week to two counts of abduction.

The Crown is asking for five years behind bars while the defence has said it is seeking two years minus credit for time served in Mexico.
