UPDATE: Man in hospital after shots fire by police attempting arrest

KELOWNA – A man is recovering in hospital after shots were fired by police trying to make an arrest, investigators said this evening.

The Independent Investigations Office, which investigates police actions, said events at 3 p.m. today had nothing to do with the CIBC bank at Harvey Ave and Cooper Road. That's where police, including the Emergency Response Team, were involved in a high profile take-down. Instead, the plainclothes unit of the Kelowna RCMP was attempting to arrest a man known to police, investigators said in a release. The wording of the the statement from the independent investigators does not make it clear the man was shot by police. He is in hospital with undetermined injuries but they are not believed to be life threatening. 

Kelowna RCMP has not issued a statement and likely will not now that the independent investigators are on scene. 

Around 3 p.m. today, multiple reports came in of a large police presence, including the Emergency Response Team, near Orchard Park Mall near Harvey Ave and Cooper Road this afternoon.
