MADRID – A biographer for Mexican singer Chavela Vargas says the veteran recording artist has left a hospital in Madrid and is resting before attempting the long flight home.
Maria Cortina said 93-year-old Vargas is now at Madrid’s Students’ Residence, a cultural centre renowned for having hosted artists and writers since it was founded in 1910.
Vargas flew into Spain on July 1 to present her latest record “La Luna Grande” which she dedicated to poet and playwright Federico Garcia Lorca, and was admitted to hospital on July 12, suffering from exhaustion and abnormally rapid heartbeat after a performance.
Cortina, who accompanied Vargas to Spain along with two nurses, said Sunday that the singer intended to return home to Tepoztlan, in southern Mexico, once doctors say she can travel.
