Disruption on Manitoba rail line grow: now freight as well as passengers
CHURCHILL, Man. – The rail line that serves as a vital link to Churchill in northern Manitoba is out of service again.
Omnitrax Canada says service from Gillam to Churchill has been out of service since Friday due to permafrost problems.
The rail company says several days of work are needed to resurface a section of the track.
Earlier this month, a derailment just south of Churchill disrupted service for a week.
The rain line has a history of problems stemming from the boggy terrain it crosses, and the federal government announced $60 million for upgrades in 2007.
Belinda Fitzpatrick, co-owner of a hotel in Churchill, says she is frustrated because she depends on the rail line for food and other supplies and has no idea how long service will be disrupted.
