Jury finds Calgary Flames prospect acted in self-defence in bar fight

CALGARY – A prospect for the NHL Calgary Flames has been acquitted of aggravated assault charges in a fight northwest of Calgary in 2012.

A jury found Michael Ferland acted in self-defence when he threw a punch, knocking out another patron, outside Stageline Saloon in Cochrane.

Both the 22-year old left-winger and his girlfriend testified at his trial in Calgary.

Court heard Ferland was ambushed as he was leaving the bar.

Ferland’s lawyer says his client is “relieved” to be free of the charges.

Ferland played in the minors last season.
