1st Black Democratic nominee for Florida gov gives up race

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Andrew Gillum, who tried to energize Florida’s young and minority voters through a Democratic challenge of the GOP’s two-decade lock on the governor’s office, has ended his hard-fought campaign.

Gillum was the first African-American nominee for Florida governor in its history. In conceding Saturday to Republican Ron DeSantis, he said however that he would remain politically active.

In a concession video on Facebook, Gillum didn’t say what he would do once his term as mayor of the Florida capital city of Tallahassee ends next week. Of his future plans, Gillum only says: “Stay tuned.”
