Pin pad scammer sentenced
KELOWNA – A man from Enderby was sentenced to two months of time served in Kelowna Provincial Court for identity theft, unauthorized use of credit card data and personation with intent to gain advantage.
James Alexander Graham, 23, pled guilty Thursday morning to soliciting donations for the Ronald McDonald House with a portable pin pad then using the information to remove money from dozens of accounts.
Graham was able to successfully defraud more than 40 people in Kelowna and Salmon Arm in March of this year before being caught near the home of one of his victims who immediately called the Ronald McDonald house for confirmation.
Judge Brad Chapman said Graham took steps to turn his life around since the arrest.
“I regret what I did,” said Graham, who admits he struggled with addiction in the past but has since moved to Kitimat where he has a full time job and fewer negative influences.
“It sounds to me like you’ve turned a corner,” Chapman said.
The sentence also includes one year of probation and an order to repay more than $1,100 to the victims.
