Strong earthquake rumbles across Alaska Panhandle, jolting Yukon homes
WHITEHORSE – A strong earthquake jolted the northern reaches of the Alaska Panhandle early Wednesday morning, rattling homes hundreds of kilometres eastward.
Earthquakes Canada confirms the magnitude 5.7 quake hit at 4:58 a.m. and was centred 10 kilometres below the surface and 94 kilometres southwest of Skagway.
Residents in Haines Junction and Whitehorse, Yukon report the quake shook homes in those communities, jolting doors and swaying curtains.
No major damage was reported.
The Alaska quake occurred just a few kilometres from the epicentre of a magnitude 4.0 shaker recorded on May 9. (CKRW)
