VITERBO — The quantity was again there but the quality wasn’t for Canada at the 2024 world bass fishing championship.
Canada’ three two-man teams all caught five-fish limits Friday, the second day of the competition on Lake Bolsena, located in the Italian province of Viterbo. But their weight of 14.310 kilograms left the Canadians with 33.260 kilograms overall and ninth in the 15-country competition.
Canada stood seventh Thursday after opening with 18.950 kilograms.
Host Italy continues to lead with 48.950 kilograms, just ahead of Australia and Spain (both 48.530). The United States, the defending champion, is fourth at 46.280.
Canada was eighth at last year’s championship in Portugal. A Canadian team has never won the event but was second in 2022 at South Carolina’s Lake Murray.
In this event, each country has three two-man teams competing daily. The two-man results from Friday weren’t immediately available.
The Canadian teams is made up of captain Pete Garnier, of Trenton, Ont., Adam Foster, of Charters Settlement, N.B., Scott Sheridan of Campbellford, Ont., David Chong, of Aurora, Ont., Phil Curtis, of St. Catharines, Ont., and Brent Valere, of Mississauga, Ont.
