VANCOUVER – David Baillargeon of Levis, Quebec and Hollie Naughton of Mississauga, Ont. were the big winners at the Canadian squash championships in Vancouver on Sunday.
Baillargeon, ranked second in the country entering the tournament, won the men’s open singles division by defeating No. 8-ranked Shawn Delierre of Montreal 7-11, 14-12, 11-5, 11-3 in a thrilling final.
Baillargeon advanced to the gold-medal final by bouncing Salaheldin Eltorgman of Toronto 11-7, 11-6, 11-7, while in the other semifinal Delierre outlasted and upset No. 1-ranked Nick Sachvie of St. Catharines, Ont. 11-6,11-7, 9-11, 7-11, 11-8.
On the women’s side, No. 1-ranked Naughton defeated No. 4-ranked Nikole Todd of Toronto 11-7, 2-11, 11-2, 11-3 to win the gold medal.
Naughton advanced to the final by beating Niki Shemirani of Toronto 11-7, 11-4, 11-2, while Todd made by the final by bouncing No. 8-ranked Alyssa J. Mehta of Toronto 11-8, 11-7, 11-8.
