The family of a missing hiker found alive in California mountains says she got lost after being chased off a trail by a man with a knife.

Sheryl Powell, 60, was hospitalized after searchers located her Monday, three days after she was reported missing in the rugged White Mountains.

A photo from the hospital shows a smiling Powell in bed surrounded by grinning family members.

Her son tells ABC News that Powell left the campsite to take her dog for a short walk. Greg Powell says his mother told him she was chased by a knife-wielding man. He says she ran away from the man and got lost.

The Inyo County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Powell was found, but didn’t say anything about her claims about a man with a knife. A call to the sheriff’s office was not immediately returned.

Searchers found the family dog earlier on Monday.

Authorities say a woman missing since Friday in California’s rugged White Mountains has been found alive and taken to a hospital.

The Inyo County Sheriff’s Office says searchers found 60-year-old Sheryl Powell on Monday in remote terrain above the town of Big Pine.

Hours earlier, officials reported finding Powell’s dog in the same general area.

Officials described Powell as “resilient and strong but exhausted.”

Powell’s husband told authorities they had just selected a campsite at a campground and she got out of their Jeep with the dog while he repositioned the vehicle. He then discovered she had vanished.

Her husband described Powell as an experienced hiker.

Searchers looking for a camper missing in California’s rugged White Mountains have found a dog matching the description of the pet she had with her.

The Inyo County Sheriff’s Office says the dog was found alive Monday morning about 2.5 miles (4 kilometres) from the last known location of 60-year-old Sheryl Powell.

Powell was reported missing by her husband on Friday.

He told authorities they had just selected a campsite at a campground and she got out of their Jeep with the dog while he repositioned the vehicle, and then discovered she had vanished.

The Sheriff’s Office says investigators have determined that the husband is not involved in the disappearance of his wife, who is described as an experienced hiker.

An extensive air-ground search is continuing for a woman reported missing from a remote campground in California’s White Mountains.

Inyo County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Carma Roper says 60-year-old Sheryl Powell of Huntington Beach remains missing Monday.

Her husband reported Friday that after they selected a site in the Grandview Campground she took their dog for a walk while he repositioned their Jeep.

The husband said that he then could not find his wife or the dog and searched for almost an hour before alerting law enforcement via a satellite device.

Roper says investigators have determined the husband is not connected to his wife’s disappearance.

Grandview Campground is at an elevation of 8,600 feet (2,621 metres) near the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, 230 miles (370 kilometres) north of Los Angeles.
