President Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage estate gains 460 acres
NASHVILLE – Four hundred and sixty acres of President Andrew Jackson’s former estate are now owned by the foundation that administers the national historic landmark.
The acquisition increases the size of the Hermitage estate by 41 per cent to 1,120 acres.
The state of Tennessee purchased the acreage from private owners in the 1970s to protect it from development.
On Friday, Gov. Bill Haslam marked its transfer to the Andrew Jackson Foundation in a ceremony at the Hermitage. Haslam said the foundation will pay a symbolic $10 for the deed.
Foundation President and CEO Howard Kittell said officials don’t yet know what they will do with the new land, but they have funding to develop a master plan for the whole property.
The Hermitage has been open to the public since 1889.
