QUETTA, Pakistan – A Pakistani official says at least two anglers drowned and five others were missing after their boat sank in rough waters in the Arabian Sea off the coast of southwestern Baluchistan province.
Abdul Shakoor Ronjho, a Fisheries Department official, said 15 fishermen who managed to reach land near Sonmiani were rescued Wednesday.
Ronjho said during the search-and-rescue operation the bodies of two fishermen were recovered and rescuers were searching for the remaining five.
The fishing boat left Karachi Fisheries the previous night with 22 on board.
Ronjho said the rescued anglers reported their boat was caught in rough waters when they started to journey into deeper waters for a bigger catch.
Such incidents involving fishing boats in Pakistan are common because of poor navigational and safety equipment.
