JOHANNESBURG – The head of South Africa’s state watchdog agency says she is delaying the release of a report on whether a wealthy business family linked to President Jacob Zuma sought to influence Cabinet minister appointments.

Public Protector Thuli Madonsela said Friday that she decided not to release the preliminary report because a court ruled that on Nov. 1 it will hear an argument from a Cabinet minister who wants to block it.

Madonsela has investigated links between Zuma and the Guptas, an Indian immigrant family accused of interfering in politics. Zuma and the Guptas deny wrongdoing.

Madonsela is completing a seven-year term as public protector and will be replaced by lawyer Busisiwe Mkhwebane on Saturday.

South Africa’s ruling party says it looks forward to the release of Madonsela’s report.
