Tropical Storm Ian strengthens in Atlantic, far from land
MIAMI – Tropical Storm Ian has strengthened a little over the Atlantic but is still not a threat to land.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Ian is far out to sea Monday, more than 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometres) southeast of Bermuda. It is moving north-northwest at about 13 mph (20 kph). Ian’s maximum sustained winds are 45 mph (75 kph).
Meanwhile, Hurricane Orlene is far out over the Pacific and no longer strengthening.
Orlene’s maximum sustained winds late Monday are near 105 mph (165 kph).
The hurricane is centred about 660 miles (1,065 kilometres) west-southwest of the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula and is moving north near 6 mph (9 kph).
Forecasters say the storm poses no threat to land.
