Soldiers in UK’s Scottish unit near end of US canoe voyage

NEW YORK – A group of British soldiers is nearing the end of its 340-mile canoe expedition that started out in Montreal and will end in New York City.

Sixteen soldiers from the Royal Regiment of Scotland left Quebec in eight canoes Aug. 30, heading south along a route that took them down Lake Champlain and Lake George to the upper Hudson River.

They made stops at such historic sites as Crown Point, Ticonderoga, Fort Edward and Saratoga to visit places where Scottish regiments fought during the French and Indian War and the American Revolution.

The Scots plan to arrive Friday in Yonkers. From there they’ll receive a New York Police Department marine unit escort on Saturday to their destination: the USS Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum on Manhattan’s West Side.
