Mayor: ‘Lawless disruption’ on Ocean Drive repels residents
MIAMI – The mayor of Miami Beach says bars are compromising security and the image of South Beach’s famed Ocean Drive.
The Miami Herald reports (http://hrld.us/29KYe1z ) that Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine, in an email Monday, proposed an ordinance that would limit liquor sales after 2 a.m. along most of the oceanfront strip known for attracting tourist crowds with its neon lights, Art Deco architecture and many bars and restaurants.
The Herald quotes Levine as writing that “lawless disruption” has escalated “to the point that many residents feel compelled to avoid the area altogether.”
City commissioners will consider Levine’s proposal at a meeting Wednesday. The ordinance wouldn’t apply to bars and lounges inside hotels.
Last year, Miami Beach banned alcohol sales between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. at sidewalk cafes.
