Man accused of trying to rob jeweler in plot to be sentenced

RICHMOND, Va. – A Virginia man who pleaded guilty to conspiring to rob a jewelry dealer as part of a plot to attack synagogues and black churches is set to be sentenced.

Prosecutors are asking a federal judge to sentence Charles D. Halderman to 8 years in prison on Tuesday.

Authorities say Halderman’s co-defendant, Robert C. Doyle, told a government informant he wanted to use the money from the robbery to finance a race war.

Halderman’s attorney says in court documents that the man was recruited to participate in the robbery and was motivated by money, not race. His attorney says that in Halderman’s conversations with his co-defendant, “there was no suggestion the robbery would fund a ‘race war.’”

An attorney for Halderman is asking the judge for a sentence of about 6 and 1/2 years.
