Slovakia wants to be ‘honest broker’ during EU presidency

BRUSSELS – Slovakia’s prime minister says promoting sustainable migrant and asylum policies will be central to his country’s forthcoming presidency of the European Union.

In light of divisions the migrants crisis exposed across the 28-country EU, Robert Fico is promising Slovakia will play the part of “honest broker.”

Slovakia, which takes over the rotating 6-month presidency on July 1, has opposed a compulsory EU plan to redistribute refugees across member states and is suing the EU.

Speaking alongside European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker Wednesday, Fico took a conciliatory tone, saying he wants “to reach a compromise” whenever possible. However, he said he doesn’t intend to change his views.

Fico conceded that Slovakia’s presidency could be dominated by the British vote on whether to leave the EU in a referendum on June 23.
