Prankster teen who videotaped man set on fire gets nine-month jail sentence

KELOWNA, B.C. – A teenager who videotaped a man being set on fire at a house party in Kelowna, B.C., has been sentenced to nine months in jail.

But Joshua McWhirter walked out of court Thursday after serving six and a half months in custody and getting two and a half months' credit for time served.

The 18-year-old victim suffered severe burns to his back and buttocks when aftershave was poured on him and he was set ablaze last December.

In February, 20-year-old Matthew Sweet-Grant received an 18-month jail sentence and two years' probation after pleading guilty to setting his sleeping friend on fire.

Sweet-Grant was charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.
