BEIJING – A landslide triggered by heavy rains has killed 35 people in a mountainous village in northwestern China, state media reported Thursday.
The landslide engulfed the village in the region of Xinjiang’s Kashgar prefecture on Wednesday morning, to the official Xinhua News Agency said.
Xinhua’s brief dispatch did not explain why reports of the landslide came out only on Thursday night, though it said the village is located 170 kilometres (100 miles) from the seat of the nearest county, Kargilik.
Heavy rains caused serious damage to parts of the area’s highways, the report said.
Rescue efforts were under way, Xinhua said.
