The Latest: Lawyer: Charges against cop should be dismissed

DECATUR, Ga. – The Latest on a hearing on a motion to dismiss the indictment against a former Atlanta-area police officer who shot an unarmed, naked man (all times local):

9:45 a.m.

A lawyer for a white former Atlanta-area police officer who shot an unarmed, naked, mentally ill black veteran argues that grand jury secrecy was violated in the case and the charges against him should be dropped.

Robert Olsen has pleaded not guilty to charges, including murder, in the death of 27-year-old Anthony Hill.

Defence attorney Don Samuel argued during a hearing Friday that during the grand jury proceeding, extra people were in the room, including extra prosecutors, and that could have kept grand jurors from feeling comfortable asking questions.

Olsen shot Hill on March 9, 2015, while responding to a call about a naked man behaving erratically outside a suburban Atlanta apartment complex. Hill’s family says he was a U.S. Air Force veteran who struggled with mental health problems.
