Bus fire believed to be arson kills 8, injures 5 in China

BEIJING – A bus suddenly burst into flames while travelling on a highway in northern China, killing eight people and injuring five in an apparent arson attack, police said Friday. Several similar fires have occurred in recent years and usually are blamed on people with mental illness or personal grudges.

Police in the city of Xi’an said they are treating the fire that occurred around noon Thursday as a criminal act. The post on their official microblog gave no information about evidence gathered or any suspects.

Several bus arson attacks in recent years in China have killed and injured scores of people.

In two of the worst, 17 people were killed and 32 injured in a January attack blamed on a 33-year-old man who survived the blaze, and 47 people were killed on a bus in 2013 that was set alight by a suicidal man who was killed.
