Former MLA passes away

PENTICTON – Former MLA John Slater has passed away, according to a release from the province.

B.C. Premier Christy Clark issued a statement of condolence following his death, noting Slater’s passion for his home and the people of Osoyoos. She pointed to his participation in everything from coaching youth sports and volunteering with the Chamber of Commerce to standing for public office, beginning as a councillor, taking the mayor’s seat, eventually becoming MLA.

“John took on the challenge of laying the groundwork to modernize century-old legislation to protect B.C.’s fresh water. He was very proud of the Water Sustainablity Act,” Clark wrote.

“Throughout Boundary – Similkameen you can find more of the fruits of John’s hard work, including the new high school in Oliver,  the new Horizon Health Centre in Osoyoos, the expanded Midway Arena, and new highway improvements and public walkways,” she said in the release.

Slater served the province as MLA for the Boundary – Similkameen from 2009 to 2013. Prior to that he was mayor of Osoyoos.

Slater resigned from his position as MLA in a surprise move in 2013, but put his name in the ring for Liberal candidate in the provincial election held later that year. The Liberal Party, citing personal issues, refused to approve his candidacy, leading Slater to announce he would run as an Independent.
